To the Australian Muslim community,
I am writing to introduce the Muslim Social Workers Network which has been established to address, promote and respond to the needs of the Muslim community in Australia.
“The social work profession facilitates social change and development, social cohesion, and the empowerment and liberation of people. Principles of social justice, human rights, collective responsibility and respect for diversities are central to social work. Underpinned by theories of social work, social sciences, humanities and indigenous knowledges, social work engages people and structures to address life challenges and enhance wellbeing”. (Australian Association of Social Workers).
Established in 2016, the purpose of the network is to:
1. Advocate for the Australian Muslim community on a micro and macro level;
2. Consult with community, organisations, and government to promote safety, equity and equality;
3. Educate professionals and non-professionals on the unique social needs of Australian Muslims;
4. Promote and provide Islamically-appropriate responses to sensitive community issues;
5. Empower the Muslim community through education and knowledge;
6. Be a professional resource that is accessible to all; and
7. Provide professional development opportunities for Muslim social workers and social work students.
The network is made up of members who have completed a Bachelor of Social Work, or above, from a recognised Australian university or are current social work students.
Members of the network include social workers who have decades of experience between them and are specialised in many areas including, but not limited to, mental health, disabilities, community development, policy, child protection, victims services and training.
